Supervisor’s research interests
The scientific problem that is in the focus of the study based on the subjectivity of assessing the process of forming new consumption practices and the effectiveness of social support institutions in the conditions of digital economy and uncertainty associated with the pandemic and social environment destabilisation. From an economic point of view, social institutions are producers of social goods and services and in a postmodern context should focus on the needs of the target audience, in particular, the fragile older age group of pre-retirement and retirement age. In economic research, consumer behavior shows reactions to a new socio-humanitarian paradigm, for example, the consumer culture approach, founded by Arnold and Thompson since 2005, is presented as a new revolution in scientific problems in the field of consumption. It is argued that an individual behaves and consumes for a specific purpose in a time frame, living his actions as a personal experience or as a common game. Consequently, consumer behavior cannot be understood without taking into account all aspects of his life and activities, such as ideological, social, cultural, symbolic and empirical consumption in its context, which forms the consumption practice of a certain social group.
The relevance and scale of this task determined by the displacing effect of consumption in connection with the costs of supporting the elderly. World Bank data show a trend of population aging at a rate of 3% per year, which affects the growth of the aging economy, including in Russia. Changes in the age structure occur due to a decrease in fertility and mortality, which leads to the "aging" of the population. If critically evaluated, both positive and negative effects are possible here. An increase in life expectancy has a positive effect on increasing labor potential, which leads to economic development due to the so-called "demographic dividends". But changes in lifestyle and consumer behavior, present new needs and challenges for the economic system as a whole, the burden on social institutions increases, which leads to stagnation and inequality. At an older age, labor incomes are lower than the need for special goods and services, part of this social burden is covered by state support institutions, but part falls on the shoulders of the younger generation, reducing consumer potential.
The scientific novelty of the task lies in the methodological approach to defining the practice of consumption as a set of routine actions in order to meet real capacities, which will allow obtaining new scientific results of intellectual analysis of socio-economic statistical information in the interests of the older generation.
